Answer:

2.09 hours.

A survey carried out in June 2005 by AOL and Salary.com found the average office worker admits to 2.09 hours of time-wasting per eight hour day. This was more than twice the level expected by Human Resource managers. Employee time wasting is more prevalent in certain sectors, with the Insurance industry and Public sector worst affected.

Also, younger employees are far more likely to engage in excessive time wasting. The average time wasted per day by an individual aged between 20 and 25 is over three times that of a person aged 45 to 55.

Answer:

Surfing the internet, socialising with co-workers and taking extended or excessive breaks.

Many other studies have similar findings

  • A survey of 1,500 office workers in the UK conducted for The Captor Group found that over eighty percent of workers went online for personal reasons when they should have been working. Of these over one third said they average around 30 mins a day on personal web browsing and email and over eight percent said they spent over two hours a day online when they should have been working.
     
  • A study carried out by Blue Coat Systems of personal Instant Messaging use among 300 UK and US workers found that 32% of UK workers spent more than 30 minutes IMing per day and that 10% spent more than one hour chatting on IM per day. 
     
  • A survey conducted by Websense calculated internet misuse costs US businesses $178 billion through lost productivity. This translates into a loss of more than $5,000 per employee per year. 
     
  • A British Telecom funded study found that 30% of UK SMEs were losing 1 day's work per week per employee to internet misuse. Any company that comprehensively tackled the time wasting could see profits jump by 15%
